Nurse Advice Line offers 24/7 advice on when and where to get care

According to a study by Aetna, more than 50 percent of emergency department visits are unnecessary or avoidable, meaning care was available from a primary care physician or urgent care facility. And those emergency department visits were costly for the patients and will increase overall cost for the VUMC health plan resulting in higher payroll premiums in the future. In fact, the cost of treatment at an in-network clinic or doctor’s office is one-fifth the cost of treatment in a hospital emergency room.

We also know that when you or a family member are sick or injured, making those decisions isn’t always easy. Fortunately, the Nurse Advice Line is available 24 hours, 7 days a week to direct you to the most effective and appropriate care. The nurse line is staffed by registered nurses who will help you decide the type of care you likely need — for example, a walk-in clinic versus the emergency room — and direct you to the best resources to access that care.

So if your medical condition is not life threatening, call your primary care physician or the Nurse Advice Line at 615.875.NRSE for advice on when and how to seek care.
